May 2026 - Explosions of Colour
The Chew Magna naturalistic wild garden explodes with colour, self-seeders, abundant planting, grasses, perennials, long grass and wonderful small details woven amongst the greenery.
There is a subtle art to managing a garden with strong ecological values. In these spaces, the question is often not simply "Is it a weed?" but rather "Does it belong here?" Many plants traditionally regarded as weeds can provide beauty, habitat, seasonal interest and valuable food sources for wildlife. Careful editing, rather than intensive tidying, helps preserve the character and diversity that make naturalistic gardens so special.
Recently, we have suggested visiting the garden less frequently to support the naturalistic feel of the space. Allowing longer periods between interventions gives plants more opportunity to grow, self-seed and spread naturally, softens edges and boundaries, encourages lush green ground cover, and helps create the relaxed, abundant atmosphere that defines this style of garden. The result is a garden that feels increasingly established, resilient and connected to the surrounding landscape.
